Introduction

A safe and welcoming place to feel understood

Moving to another country can be an exciting and meaningful experience, but it can also bring challenges you did not expect. Building a new life, finding your place in a different culture, creating new connections or being away from family and familiar surroundings can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Perhaps you are experiencing stress, anxiety or burnout. You may find yourself worrying more than usual, feeling lonely or having difficulty connecting with others. Maybe you are struggling with homesickness, adjusting to life in the Netherlands, challenges at work or a major life event. Or perhaps you simply feel that something is not quite right, but you are not sure what you need.

Whatever brings you here, you are welcome.

My name is Michelle, and I am a psychologist with more than ten years of experience in mental healthcare. In my practice, I work with adults as well as children, adolescents and families. I offer sessions in both English and Dutch.

A culturally open and personal approach

I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and as an equal, regardless of their cultural background, nationality, beliefs or life experiences.

I have always enjoyed travelling and discovering different parts of the world. Through travelling, I have developed a genuine curiosity about different cultures, perspectives and ways of life. It has taught me to appreciate that there are many different ways of seeing and experiencing the world, and that there is always more to learn from someone else’s perspective.

What can I help you with?

You can come to my practice with a wide range of psychological, emotional and social concerns, including:

  • Stress and burnout
  • Anxiety and excessive worrying
  • Loneliness or difficulty building meaningful connections
  • Homesickness
  • Adjusting to a new culture or life in the Netherlands
  • Work-related stress or difficulties
  • Low self-confidence or insecurity
  • Major life events and transitions
  • Parenting challenges
  • Emotional regulation
  • Overstimulation or mental restlessness
  • Difficult or traumatic experiences

You don’t need to have a specific diagnosis or know exactly what is wrong before reaching out. Sometimes it is enough to know that you are struggling and would like someone to help you make sense of what is happening.

Support for children, adolescents and families

Moving to another country can also affect children and families. Children may respond differently to a new environment, a change of school, language barriers, separation from friends or family, or the adjustment to a different culture.

I work with children and adolescents as well as their parents, creating a safe environment where they can express themselves and explore what they need. Parents are also involved in the process, because supporting a child often means looking at the wider family and environment as well.

Warm, empathetic and tailored to you

Every person is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to psychological support. I therefore take the time to understand your story, your circumstances and what matters to you.

Some sessions may focus on gaining insight into what is happening, while others may be more practical. Together, we can explore patterns that may be keeping you stuck and work on concrete steps towards greater calm, confidence and balance.

My goal is not only to help reduce your symptoms, but also to strengthen your understanding of yourself, your resilience and your sense of control.

A place where you can feel at home

Seeking psychological support in a country that is not your own can feel like a big step. You may be unsure about how the Dutch healthcare system works, what to expect from therapy, or whether you will feel understood.

My aim is to provide a safe and welcoming space where you can speak openly, in English or Dutch, without having to explain or justify who you are.

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

If you would like to explore whether my approach is a good fit for you, you are very welcome to get in touch. Together, we can look at what you are experiencing and what kind of support would be most helpful.

Fees

A 60-minute session costs €95. Each session consists of 50 minutes of conversation and 10 minutes for preparation and follow-up work. At this time, my psychological support is not covered by the Dutch health insurance system, which means that the costs are paid privately.

Although this may feel like an additional hurdle, many people consciously choose to make this investment in themselves. It offers freedom and flexibility: you do not need a referral, you can often start quickly, and you receive the personal attention you need at the moment you need it.

For some clients, there may be an option to have part of the costs reimbursed. If you already have a DSM-5 diagnosis and have additional health insurance, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement with a referral letter from your GP. Please check with your health insurance provider to see whether this applies to you.

You may also be able to receive reimbursement through your employer, for example through a professional development budget, reintegration support, or a wellbeing or vitality programme. It may therefore be worthwhile to ask your manager or HR department about the possibilities.

If you have any questions about the costs or reimbursement options, I am happy to think along with you and explore what may be possible.
